17th of November:

Wow, as usual, long time since an update. Sorry about that. Had planned a big update when the site was 3 years old, but then stuff got in the way... I’m in the middle of moving, but I’ll hopefulle do some updating and add new comps before Christmas. Stay tuned!

10th of June:
Added a forum to the site, if anyone should feel like discussing comps, etc etc. You know what a forum is! :) Powered by Nabble.com. I haven't tried it yet, but hopefully it'll work fine.

9th of June:
Added two DVD-R titles, you can find them under the Bonus-header. I will eventually merge the alpabetical and bonus/dvd-r page into one.

I also just got two review discs from Montreal Film Studio and will check them out this weekend (at least one of them, hopefully both). Check back to read my opinions of them.

26th of May:
Added companies in the 3+ category: Montreal Film Studio and Passport Video, and Trailers from Hell in the 2 releases category. I also see that I forgot to give you notice on the two titles added the 12th of May: Mad Ron's Prevues from Hell and Coming Distractions. Check 'em out!

Also did a little update on the alphabetical list, added some titles.

8th of May 2011:
Wow, it´s been over 6 months since the last update! Sorry about that. Lots of work and other stuff going on. Closed down my other blog "Prevues of Coming Attractions" a few months back, so I should have more time for this one.. anyways, I´m back now. I´ll try to add some new DVDs in the near future.

I collected all the "1 release" companies to one page, and will continue with that. Hopefully that will make me do some more updates quicker when a new DVD enters the market.

I also plan to do a "DVD-R" page, with focus on quality discs released on DVD-R (and no, I´m not doing the SWV releases. One criteria is that they need to have a menu, and not just be a copy from a VHS). Think of the Trailer Trash disc as a good example. If you have any suggestions to good discs, let me know!

Nucleus Films will bring you all the trailers for the Video Nasties this October! I´ve been waiting for this one for a long time :)

Also, the classic from the VHS era, "Mad Ron´s Prevues from Hell" is making it onto DVD. More info to come.

8th of July
Long time since any updates, but I've finished my masters degree at the university and have started working, leaving little time to update my blogs. However, I've completed All Day Entertainment, with two DVDs: Tales of Frankenstein (bonus), and The Pulp Cinema Trailer Collection. I've also listed Shock Festival, by Bloody Earth Films.

At the DVD rumors, Synapse is working on their repackaging of volume 1+2 for Blu-ray. Their Nikkatsu disc is coming along nicely, as is volume 6 (more Alamo trailers) but no streetdates. Soon hopefully!

Named after the old burlesque theaters located on 42nd Street in New York City, where 'bump n' GRIND' dancing and striptease were featured, Grindhouses were theaters that mainly showed exploitation films during the 1970's.

Changing economics forced these theatres to either close or offer something that television could not, mainly sleaze, slasher horror, and dubbed martial arts films which usually contained large amounts of sex, violence and bizarre subject matter.

Quality varied, but low budget production values and poor print quality were common. By the 1980s, home video and cable channels killed the Grindhouses.

Presented with period intermissions and titles, this Grindhouse trailers DVD is a sure-fire party hit!

Review: Fantastic Movie Trailers 9: Grindhouse Insanity

The ninth collection from Montreal Film Studio is pretty good! It will, like the artwork claims, be "a sure-fire party hit!" Like it's predecessors, this also mixes trailers from all kinds of genres. There's no system to what trailers next on the disc, and that is part of the fun. On this collection, there's a lot of giallos, which is a nice touch.

If you're a trailer comp fan, there's good chance you've seen many of this material before, not much new stuff. If you're just getting into trailers this collection would be a good startingpoint.

As the others in the series, this collection also has a few old intermissions inbetween the trailers, however, most of them are collected into one session.

Qualitywise, the trailers are scratcy on the video, and there are a few hisses here and there on the audio, but that's the way it should be! The bad thing is that there is some compression artefacts.. if you have a big screen, it could get annoying.

A fun collection worth seeing!

Review: Fantastic Movie Trailers (Extended 2nd edition)

Fantastick Movie Trailers is a fun collection of trailers. It mixes a wide range of genres, from spaghetti westerns, blaxploitation, sci-fi, creature movies, and many more. Were many other compilations often stick to a few selected themes, this compilation has them all, all jumbled together. If you have seen many of these types of collections before, you'll probably see a few trailers you've already seen earlier. However, if you're new to trailer compilations, this disc will be a good starting point. It's not as good as for example the 42nd Street Forever-series, in my opinion, but it will keep you entertained for 108 minutes, with 50 trailers!

Between trailers there are some old intermissions and titles. Personally, I could do without those, never particularly liked them as I feel they interupts the “flow”. They are few tough, mostly collected in an “Intermission time!” in the middle of the show.

Quality on audio is pretty good. Video is, as you might expect, a little scratchy, but that is how it should be! The artwork on the DVD is pretty bad though... Thankfully, MFS have improved their design skills on later volumes in the series.

All in all, you should give this a try if you're into movie trailers and want to relax a couple of hours.

Comment:

Most trailers are not in 3D.
The dvd has 1 small navigational problem. When you select "backstage" from the main menu, then select "cool stuff about 3-D", you will see some posters on the left and some text on the right. If you hit "next" repeatedly, you will advance through the different screens. However, once you get to the "I Love Lucy" poster, you will get stuck there - if you hit next, the player will lock up. And if you hit your menu button on the remote after that, it will briefly let you see the next screen, but it is corrupted, and will automatically take you back to the main menu.

Of course, most of the films themselves could never live up to these incredible trailers, some of which can today be considered true masterpieces of creative hyperbolic advertising and marketing. Here on your screen is a whole world of film that just a few short years ago was considered lost or worthless. The industry that produced and distributed these films had long since vanished and there was no sign of the men who actually created these bottom of the barrel celluloid wonders. That is until now.

In 1990 (roughly), we started Something Weird Video with the idea of releasing films that had never been on video. In my mind, the last great genre to be scavenged were the exploitation/sexploitation films of the 30's through the 70's. After looking into this further, I realized that there were nearly 2,000 movies out there yet to be discovered. So with this for inspiration, my quest began and wouldn't you know, just out of the blue I fell into a large collection of 16mm girlie arcade loops (which became the first compilation videos we put together!) Around the same time I received an unexpected phone call that suddenly made all this real - my future and hands-down the king of sexploitation Dave Friedman was on the other end of the line - this would be the beginning of a long and fruitful friendship for both of us. Dave's films became the building blocks for our film collection and he has taught and guided me through the wonderful world of sexploitation - introducing me to his colleagues (Dan Sonney, Harry Novak, H.G. Lewis, Bob Cresse, and all the other colorful characters who were involved during his heyday) and they've been eager to dive into the business again. (And initially, most are shocked that anyone is even interested in this stuff to begin with!)

The next major accomplishment was figuring out a way to get these films onto video. Jimmy Maslon of QC Video (he also owns the H.G. Lewis and Doris Wishman collections) solved this problem when he and his lab took on the responsibility of transferring the thousands of 35mm prints and negatives we've collected, making the highest quality videos of these titles available anywhere (to satisfy our growing and demanding collector base).

Very early on in this business, I decided that full-color packaging was the only way to go. Besides looking really cool all lined up together, it was important to use the original ad art (as abrasive as it can be sometimes) to capture that special sleazy quality of Main Street USA.

Every racy and taboo subject known to man can be found in our catalog. Consider it as one-stop shopping for all your exploitation/sexploitation/world of the Weird indulgences. The true video nut need not look further than here!

The future looks bright for us with over 1,500 films left to find, cable and television opportunities, CD-Roms, and all the other endless possibilities out there. We're well on our way to being in your lives for years to come.
